Berendo Middle School is proud to belong to the 21st Century Program Learning and Beyond program hosted by Los Angeles Trade-Tech Community College. The 21st Century Program strongly believes in the power of the youth to effect positive changes in society. All its activities are conducted based on the following values:
The 21st Century Program aims to inspire a passion for knowledge among the young learners so that they will become positive role models in the community. Through education, learners will self-actualize their part as leaders in the development of a community. Coping with the fast-paced techno-logical and educational environment of the new century poses enormous challenges to educators, learners, and parents alike. Future success and stability as an individual or leader greatly depends on a healthy emotional IQ developed in the atmosphere of home and school. An effective after-school program must necessarily stimulate the learners' social and creative abilities through educational opportunities and constructive experiences. The synergy of learners, parents, and educators make this unique endeavor truly rewarding. The partnering schools are: Berendo Middle SchoolOperating under the auspices of Los Angeles Trade Technical College and funded by No Child Left Behind, the 21st Century Program offers an enriching after-school experience that specifically seeks to boost the middle school learners' performance in Mathematics, Science, English, and Reading. This after-school program/Off-Track is designed to coax the learners' innate knowledge and prepare them for future college or university coursework. Partner schools within the general service area of LATTC will recommend students who stand to benefit from the program based on the Accuplacer online subject proficiency tests. Learners are given the opportunity to take college-level courses that may be credited towards high school class requirements or an associate's or bachelor's degree. Attendance and learning progress will be closely monitored to ensure strict compliance to 21st Century Program goals. The 21st Century Program addresses this disturbing trend through the education of the community's children. The program offers a novel after-school instruction for middle school learners in a variety of college-level courses such as: Applied Mortgage ComputationIn cooperation with LATTC, this holistic learning approach directly exposes students to higher education and motivates them to benefit from the activities. Stimulating an interest in the Arts, or in Mathematics, or in Science at a young age channels youthful energies into creative directions. Participation in worthwhile activities and frequent group interaction increases the students' awareness of their responsibilities to family, community, and society. Such activities will have a positive effect on the self-esteem.
